MCTXSheriff Investigates Gas Pump Card Skimmers
On April 25, 2019, members of a local neighborhood watch contacted the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention to inform the Sheriff’s Office they believed there were credit card skimming devices in a local gas station fuel pumps. Skimming devices are often installed inside the fuel pumps and are able to collect the credit/debit card information when customers use the card. The criminals then return later to download the information and use the data to create fake credit cards or make online purchases.

On April 26th MCTXSheriff Patrol Deputies met with technicians to inspect the gas pumps at the Chevron at 16441 Highway 105 East in Conroe, TX. During the investigation, the technicians located two credit card skimming devices. The skimming devices have been removed and the deputies are investigating who planted the devices.

“This is another example of what can be accomplished when the public and law enforcement work together to police their community. Without the actions of these alert citizens, these skimmers could have gone unnoticed and led to more citizens being victimized.” Sheriff Rand Henderson.

This crime is becoming more prevalent across the United States. We urge our citizens to be diligent, monitor your bank transactions frequently and question unknown charges. If your card information has been compromised, contact your banking institution immediately and cancel your card. You can then contact Law Enforcement for a police report.
